Van Diemen’s Land is the first name given to what is now Tasmania, part of Australia. It used to be a penal colony; British convicts were sent there. Once they served their sentence, they usually relocated to Victoria and when gold fever hit, they rushed there to get in on the action. The people from Van Diemen’s Land were called "Vandemonians" and were not well-liked; hence, the name change.
